Analysis of an Issue # 5

ESSAY QUESTION:
“Out of respect for individual freedom, government should impose no restrictions on an individual’s ability to wager at online casinos.”Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
YOUR RESPONSE:
Some people believe that out of respect for individual freedom, government should impose no restrictions on an individual’s ability to wager at online casinos. Others contend that some amount of government control is necessary to look after the well-being of its citizens. The issue is a contentious one, with arguments to be made for either side. But I believe that some amount of government control is necessary on an individual’s ability to wager at online casinos.Firstly, no one should be allowed to spend more than his or her capacity. It is for this reasons that banks put a maximum credit limit on individual credit cards or gauge an individual’s credit-worthiness to determine the maximum amount of loan he or she can take. Similar principle applies to online casinos. Government should propose rules on the maximum amount any person can be sanctioned for, while wagering at an online casino.

Secondly, while we have banks and credit agencies monitoring the financial health of an individual in all other cases, we have no such controls put in place in the case of online casinos. Hence the role of the government becomes even more important. It is the obligation of any government to do anything in its power to look after the well-being of its citizens. Thus, in the absence of any other agency monitoring the financial capability of an individual placing an online wager, the government should take the lead in putting controls in place.

And most importantly, traditionally people taking part in gambling and wagering at online casinos are the ones who would be most prone to take risks. It is possible that such people risk their financial safety and that of their families, in the hope of making gains at online casinos. The availability of online casinos at the touch of a button, has the risk of turning such people into serial offenders. Thus it becomes even more important for the government to ensure that online gambling remains an activity to have fun and does not lead to financial ruin. This can be achieved by placing restrictions on an individual’s ability to wager at online casinos.

Thus we can see that there are arguments to support both sides. But to ensure that people do not spend more than their capacity, in the absence of any other controlling authority and to make sure that online casinos remain recreational and do not lead to financial ruin, the government should impose restrictions on an individual’s ability to wager at online casinos.
